Few characters are more recognizable – that is, when you can find him – than Waldo. The elusive man in the striped sweater, known for his tendency to get lost and his bold fashion choices, has become a cultural icon, with millions of copies of his books sold.
Martin Handford, a freelance illustrator, first drew Waldo (known in the UK as Wally) in the late 1980s after being approached by a publisher looking to showcase his unique talent for drawing crowd scenes. Handford added Waldo into the book at the end as a way to connect each scene. When “Where’s Waldo?” was published in 1987, the character grew instantly popular.
