What is the “true” cost of aging in place?
We can all agree…for the most part, we all want to “die” at home. However, there are things one must consider while making that declaration: Health and mobility concerns force the issue for some to think about the “true” cost of staying at home no matter what.
Depending on the extent of renovations the cost can easily top $10K to $150K. Modifying doors, showers, installing ramps, removing carpet for ease of mobility, etc. is expensive. Most seniors live in older homes and the cost of renovations can be quite high. Renovations typically do not pay for themselves over time. The average senior will not outlive their renovations.
As you age, you will need help with some of life’s daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, cooking, laundry, grocery shopping, etc. The average cost of a private-duty caregiver can range from $12/hr. to $22/hr. These costs can easily top over $4K a month depending on how many hours a day you require assistance. Remember, we are talking 7 days a week.
Getting out of the house and driving is a big challenge for a lot of advanced seniors. The feeling of being trapped in your own home can be devastating. One can easily feel isolated and depressed. Though many folks are using car services as Uber and Lyft these costs can easily stack up as well. The average cost of car services can be $12 to $14 one way depending how far you need to travel.
As we age, maintaining and existing can be expensive and troubling. Mowing the lawn, cleaning gutters, changing air filters can be daunting tasks. You will be wise to contract with a lawn service company and a neighborhood handy man.
Wanting to age in place at home seems a reasonable thought. However, with age comes the general weakening of bones and muscles. Typically, seniors do not want to be bothered with activities of daily living. The convenience of having someone to assist is quite appealing. The decision is not always cut and dry. Many factors should be considered. Assisted living may be more appealing and practical to some.
However, there are benefits to both options. Along with your family, make a list of pros and cons. Don’t be afraid to make several moves during your evaluation to always provide the most “optimum” level of care needed at the present time. Never feel like you have to make the move that is going to satisfy all concerned. You might want to consider a step down approach. Giving you options along the age continuum.
