Literacy Advance of Houston hosted its annual “Scrabble in the City” fundraiser drawing more than 225 guests to Saint Arnold Brewing Company.
Teams of four squared off against all comers during the action-packed Scrabble tournament. In the end, the Goya Foods “Extra Virgins” took home the coveted “Scrabble in the City” trophy, with the “Spelling Misfits” coming in second place and the CenterPoint Energy team in third. Best Team Name was awarded to “Women in Black — Cancer Prevention Investigators,” led by Literacy Advance board member Diana Hoover, while Whole Foods Market took home Best Team Costume.
Emceed by KPRC’s Khambrel Marshall, Scrabble fans enjoyed Saint Arnold’s famous brews, snacks from Whole Foods Market and sweets from Nothing Bundt Cakes. In addition to the board-game action, participants bid on silent auction packages, snapped up raffle tickets for a chance to win a three-night stay in Vail Valley, Colorado and capped off the evening with a lively round of Heads or Tails.
Held on May 3, 2017, the event raised over $35,000 in support of Literacy Advance of Houston, an education and workforce development organization providing free literacy and work readiness classes to adults.
