More than 275 supporters gathered on October 2, 2018 for Houston Methodist's Faith & Medicine Biennial Luncheon. Chaired by Libbie Nelson, Lou Houser and Wendy Moreland, the event featured an interactive panel focusing on supportive & palliative care and spiritual care at Houston Methodist.
The luncheon opened with an invocation by Congregation Beth Israel senior rabbi, David Lyon, and featured moving testimonials by Libbie Nelson and Neil Bush. Houston Methodist president and CEO, Marc L. Boom, MD, moderated a panel of experts from their supportive & palliative care team, as well as a spiritual care leader.
Sarah Grudier, LCSW, clinical social worker, Bettie Hightower, DMin, senior chaplain, and Karina Ramirez, MD, a palliative medicine physician, discussed how and when these professionals can best be integrated into the health care teams caring for loved ones.
The luncheon also featured a musical performance by Claire Hightower and a benediction by vice president of spiritual care and values integration, Rev. Charles Millikan, DMin.
This year's event focused on the supportive & palliative care specialty at Houston Methodist, which aims to ease the disease burden and to provide the patient with the best possible quality of life emotionally, spiritually and physically. Proceeds from the luncheon benefited Houston Methodist’s Supportive & Palliative Care service and the Department of Spiritual Care.
