More than 300 Houston Methodist supporters gathered at River Oaks Country Club to explore the link between an individual’s spiritual beliefs and physical health at Faith & Medicine.
Honorary chair and former first lady, Barbara Bush, hosted the luncheon on November 30, 2016, along with chair Libbie Nelson, Emily Crosswell, Connie Dyer, Joyce Haufrect, Cathy Jodeit, Laura Millikan, Wendy Moreland, Paula Walter, Elizabeth Blanton Wareing and Kay Werlein.
Spencer Tillman, Super Bowl XXIV champion and the event’s emcee, introduced Dr. Paula Dobbs-Wiggins, a private practice psychiatrist and professor at Southern Methodist University’s Perkins School of Theology who addressed how the interaction between a person’s spiritual beliefs, psychology and physical health correlated to how well they healed.
Rev. Ken Werlein, founder of Faithbridge Church, followed by sharing his personal story about his time at Houston Methodist and how he believes his spirituality helped him to heal. Guests were also treated to musical performances by Rob Landis and the Houston Children’s Chorus.
Proceeds from the luncheon benefited Houston Methodist’s Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program, an interfaith education program that has helped train more than 500 residents and interns during its 45-year history. The program provides a unique opportunity for trainees to experience a full range of education opportunities in clinical care, theology, psychology, self-awareness and compassion.
