The Society for Leading Medicine members gathered at Sarah and Duncan Underwood’s beautiful home to applaud another year of generous support. The evening celebrated The Society’s 529 members who gave more than $5 million to fund research, education and patient care in 2017.
The Underwoods, along with co-chairs Amy and Gentry Lee, opened the evening by thanking members for their ongoing philanthropic commitment to Houston Methodist.
President and CEO Dr. Marc Boom shared the impact of The Society’s gifts. Last year, following the devastating impact of Hurricane Harvey, The Society contributed $1 million from the Excellence Fund toward the newly created $8 million Houston Methodist Employee Relief Fund. The fund helped approximately 6,000 nurses, physicians, housekeepers, food service employees, maintenance workers and other staff, many of whom, despite their own personal losses of homes, cars and property, cared for Houston Methodist’s patients throughout the storm.
Following Dr. Boom’s remarks, Dr. Joshua Harris—associate professor of clinical orthopedic surgery, head physician for the Houston Dynamo, team physician for the Houston Ballet and consulting physician for Rice University—spoke about the newest advances in the Houston Methodist Department of Orthopedics & Sports Medicine.
City Kitchen created an enchanting experience for guests with beautiful floral arrangements and décor. Their delicious menu included beef tenderloin, jumbo lump crab and leak and gruyere tarts with a signature drink of Ginger Pear Moscow Mules.
The Society for Leading Medicine is Houston Methodist’s premier annual giving society and helps fulfill Houston Methodist's vision for the future through philanthropic support and engagement.
