How do I know when it's time to explore assisted living for my parent or loved one?
Making the decision to explore assisted living for a parent or loved one is a big step, and knowing when and how to take that step can be a challenge. Seniors don’t always realize or accept that they may need more help and family members aren’t always aware that the need exists until a crisis occurs. There are a few common indicators that can help you know when it's time to start thinking about assisted living. Spending a few days with an aging parent or loved one is a good way to see if any of these indicators are present. You may see signs of concern that weren't readily apparent in routine phone calls or during quick visits.
What are a few key warning signs to recognize when a loved one may need more support?
Forgetfulness is common—this could include short term memory loss, forgetting to pay bills, not taking medication or taking it improperly, not managing personal affairs and a lack of follow-through on tasks. You may also notice issue avoidance, disorientation of time and place or loss of judgment. There may also be more obvious physical changes, such as a change in personal hygiene, weight loss or even poor home maintenance, such as unwashed laundry or dirty dishes. They may also show signs socially, such as losing touch with friends, no longer participating in favorite activities, avoiding social situations or showing signs of depression.
