Virtual Event: Spring 2020 Gerontology Resources Symposium
Attend the Gerontology Resources Symposium virtually during its two workshops on September 25 & October 2.
On Friday, September 25, the topic is "Dispelling the Myth: Older Adults and Substance Use." At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain the demographic shifts that contribute to increase in the prevalence of substance use and abuse among older adults
- Identify the most common substances used among older adults
- Discuss the unique consequences and vulnerabilities that older adults can experience in the context of substance use and misuse in later life
On Friday, October 2, the topic is "Older Adults and Substance Use: Ethical and Clinical Challenges." This session will build on the previous session. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Articulate the challenges related to assessment and diagnosis of substance misuse and substance use disorder in later life
- Identify potential motivations to use substances in later life
- Assess older adults who use substances to identify harmful use
- List the types of treatments available to and best suited for older adults who use substances
- Identify and manage unique ethical issues for practice with older adults who use substances
Registrants attending both sessions will receive 6.0 CEUs (3.0 Ethics). They are approved for social workers, LPC, LMFT and psychologists.
