The Story of Paradise Road Presented by Dirk Stronck!
Join us to hear his story…when the Japanese invaded the South Pacific in 1941, six-year-old Dirk Stronck, the son of Dutch colonials, was detained for three years as a prisoner of war in an Indonesian concentration camp.
Mr. Stronck served as technical advisor on the 1997 movie, Paradise Road, about this experience, starring Glenn Close. The inspiration for the movie was the enormously positive attitude of the women which drove them to form a choir to sing many classical pieces by Dvorak, Brahms, Mozart, and other composers. Their repertoire was performed totally from memory, without any instruments or written music. Although completely forbidden by the Japanese, their musical efforts uplifted the camp population, including the camp guards and officers (even the dreadful Kempitai officer).
