Brookdale Senior Living CE Series
Join Brookdale Senior Living on Tuesday, April 6 for "Substance-Use Disorder and the Older Adult: A Hidden Reality" presented by Doris Fischer-Sanchez, DNP, APN-BC, CPHRM, clinical and enterprise risk management consultant.
Substance-use disorder is not usually associated with the older population, but as the Baby Boomer population continues to age, substance use/misuse is becoming more of public health concern. Substance-use disorder is not limited to alcohol prescription drug use and the older adult. Recreational and illicit drug use is also on the rise. This presentation will discuss the prevalence of substance-use in the older adult and its impact on physical and mental health. The discussion will touch on the social implications of this problem and provide resources that assist with recognition, prevention and treatment for older adults with substance-use disorder.
Following this presentation the participant will be able to:
- Understand the prevalence of substance-use disorder in the older adult.
- Identify both physical and psychiatric signs of substance-use disorder specific to the older adult.
- Discuss social implications of substance-use disorder in the older adult.
- Become familiar with resources for recognition, prevention and treatment of substance-use disorder in older adults.
