What is the most important step in emergency readiness?
The most important step is to have a plan. Prepare a plan that considers the most likely natural events that happen in your area. It is important to test your plan at least quarterly and make changes accordingly. It's also important to have a way to get weather and news updates.
Can you provide an example of a plan?
As an example, your plan should include a list of numbers to call for evacuation as well as locate your nearest shelter. Make sure you refill medications as well as stock up on non-perishable food and water ahead of time. And, if you have a condition that requires frequent treatments such as dialysis, it is important that you get into contact with a hospital that provides hemodialysis before the emergency occurs. Thus, you will be able to plan for early admission before situations get worse.
Your plan might look something like this:
- Call 911 for evacuation.
- Make sure all paper documents are in waterproof container.
- Make sure the emergency kit has water, no expired food, all medications and a copy of medical records.
- Verify there is at least a three days’ supply of food for the family pet.
What if you don’t know anyone to call in case of emergency?
Simply dial 911 and they will be able to help.
