What is a Personal Care Home?
Often referred to as a Residential Care Home, Personal Care Home or Board and Care Home. Those with more than three residents are licensed and regulated as an assisted living community by the state. They provide room, board, housekeeping, supervision, meals, medication management and personal care assistance with basic activities of living (ADL’s) like personal hygiene, dressing, eating and walking.
Typically, these homes are located in neighborhoods and offer private or shared rooms. They are designed to convey a sense of a personal home—cozy and intimate. The number or residents can vary however many have fewer than 16 which also lends itself to a more home-like environment.
Special activities and wellness programs are often offered to their residents. Staff supervision is provided round the clock with nursing and medical care usually provided through Medicare home health and hospice companies. Some will have agreements with a geriatrician or nurse to provide in-home visits for regular check-ups. Specialized services such as caring for those with Alzheimer’s or other health-related challenges vary from community to community.
A Personal Care Home is a good alternative to a commercialized assisted living when you’re looking for a more home-like environment for your loved one.
